What we store

• Your recordings. Audio and video captured by each participant's browser, plus the host's backup copy of the guest's stream.
• Session records. Room code, session title you type, participant role (host or guest), display name if given, join and leave times, and the browser user agent.
• A reliability timeline. Events such as "recording started", "chunk confirmed", "connection lost". This is how we can tell whether a recording actually survived. It records what happened to the file, not what was said in it.
• Account details, once accounts exist: your email address, and billing records held by Stripe.

What we do not do

We do not sell your data. We do not use your recordings to train machine learning models. We do not transcribe, analyse or listen to your recordings. There is no advertising on Tape and no advertising trackers on the recording pages.

How recordings are protected

Storage is a private bucket with no public access. Recordings are encrypted in transit and at rest. Object keys use random identifiers and are never sequential or guessable. Access is by short-lived signed URL only: uploads are scoped to a single piece of a single recording for five minutes, and downloads are available only to the host of that room.

What we will not claim: Tape is not end-to-end encrypted. We hold keys to the storage, which means we are technically capable of accessing recordings — we do not, and there is no feature or process by which we do, but saying otherwise would be untrue. Any service claiming both "we can't see your data" and server-side playback is overstating something.

How long we keep it

Recordings are deleted automatically 30 days after the session, enforced by a storage lifecycle rule rather than by us remembering. Session records and the reliability timeline are kept longer, because they are how we investigate failures, but they contain no audio or video. You can delete a recording yourself at any time before the 30 days are up.

Who else is involved

We use a small number of providers to run the service: Cloudflare (storage, network, and the signalling connection that lets two browsers find each other), Netlify (hosting and server functions), Neon (database), and Stripe (payments). Analytics on the marketing page is Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookie-free and does not fingerprint visitors. There is no analytics of any kind on the recording pages.

Guests

A guest does not create an account. We store their display name if they give one, their participation in that session, and their recording. The host of the room controls that recording and can delete it. If you were recorded and want the recording removed, contact the host, or contact us and we will help.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@withmagic.ai and we will respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live you may also have the right to complain to a data protection authority.

Cookies

Tape does not use advertising or tracking cookies. The product uses your browser's own storage to keep your session going and to remember rooms you created on that device, so that you can find your own recordings again. That data stays in your browser.

Changes

If we change this policy materially we will say so here and update the date at the top.
